Cette oeuvre se veut être un préquel au manga Tetsuwan Atom (Astro Boy), oeuvre phare d'Osamu Tezuka. Le manga inspirant cet anime a été réalisé sous la supervision de Makoto Tezuka (fils du mangaka), en collaboration avec Tezuka Productions. L'histoire se déroule bien avant la naissance d'Atom (Astro), à une époque où les professeurs Tenma et Ochanomizu ne sont encore de "simples" étudiants. En cette période de reconstruction du Japon cinq ans après une guerre, ils tentent de mettre au point le premier robot ''ayant du cœur''.
